Thanks very much for your email, because you may have uncovered
an accidentally introduced bug in abc.

abc 1.1.0 (released Oct '05) performs as reported in the paper
abc 1.1.1 (released Mar '06) does not

According to the abc changelog there were no changes or bug-fixes
to the inter-procedural optimisations during this period so, as
you can imagine, it is taking us a while to track down how the
problem was introduced.

We will let you know as soon as we uncover what happened.

In the meantime you may wish to try some of your experiments with
abc 1.1.0, but unfortunately you will need to use a Java 1.4 VM
or older --- abc 1.1.0 will crash when using the -O3 option with
Java 1.5 libraries.
