[Soot-list] code cleanups

Hi,

I've noticed quite a few code cleanups recently, which is great. Glad
someone has the time to do these.

I'm studying library upgrades and their effects on downstream developers.
So I'm curious to know whether we are making breaking changes or are they
all backwards compatible?
