Saturday morning pick-up hockey

Who are we?

We are a group of women, mostly from Montreal West and NDG, who get together on Saturday mornings for some pickup hockey. We usually combine skating drills, stick handling drills and a scrimmage. Our members vary in skill level, but we can all skate, and all have a desire to improve our hockey skills.

How can I join?

Our group is fairly popular, but we sometimes have openings and often we have room for spares. If you are interested in joining, or putting your name on the spare list or waiting list, contact Gabi ( korf_uzan AT videotron DOT ca).

What equipment do I need?

You need all the basic hockey equipment including: well-fitting hockey skates (make sure they are sharp), a good quality and well-fitting helmet with full face protection, a neck guard, shin pads, elbow pads, hockey gloves and a hockey stick (make sure you have the correct shot (left/right) and the height should be about up to your nose when standing without skates). You will probably also want to have hockey pants and shoulder pads, just to protect against those unexpected bumps and crashes.

Goalies Wanted

Are you a goalie looking for some practice time? We would love to have you come to our pickup hockey. We start with drills so we can give you lots of shots, then we have a scrimmage which is more like a real game situation. Goalies skate for free! If you are interested, plase contact Gabi (korf_uzan AT videotron DOT ca).

Arenas

Where are the other arenas?

Away games for the Stringrays will be played at other arenas. Here is some information borrowed from the TMR site for
other arenas.

Where is the Montreal West arena?

The Saturday morning pick-up hockey is played at the Montreal West Arena. Check out this map. The best way to get there is to find Westminster from either Cote St. Luc Road or Sherbrooke Street West, then go on Westminster until you find Nelson - there is a sign pointing to "recreation". Go to the end of Nelson, turn right, and you will see the arena at the edge of the field.

If you are coming from downtown you have 2 choices.

  • You can take the slow route by going west on Sherbrooke Street until it ends. It ends at Westminster where you turn right. Go along Westminster until you come to Nelson (sign for Recreation and arena) and turn left onto Nelson. Go to the end of Nelson, turn right and you will see the arena at the edge of the soccer field. Parking is right by the arena and field.
  • You can get there faster if you come by 720 and St. Jacques. Take 720 West from downtown and exit at St. Jacques. Follow St. Jacques, continuing west. You will drive for a while and then pass the intersection of Cavendish (Goodyear on the right, Speedy on the left), then you will pass a small shopping center on your left which has a Super C, and then you will see the new Gazette printing plant at your right. Just at the Gazette printing plant there is a Y junction with a Petro Canada and McDonalds in the point of the Y. Follow the RIGHT arm of the Y and you will have McDonalds on your left and a Reno Depot on your right. Keep going until you get to a complicated intersection with the MW Town Hall sort of in front of you. This is a small oldish building with a great garden. Turn right onto Westminster. Go along Westminster until you come to Nelson (sign for Recreation and arena) and turn left onto Nelson. Go to the end of Nelson, turn right and you will see the arena at the edge of the soccer field. Parking is right by the arena and field.

If you are coming from the West Island, then I find the best route is to come on highway 20, heading east. Exit at exit 62 (Saint Pierre, St. Jacques). When you exit, stay in the rightmost lane for a while, otherwise you end up going back on to highway and on your way to the Mercier Bridge. After passing the ramp back to the highway, go to left lane and go to the end. Turn left at the flashing red light onto St. Jacques and proceed through Ville. St. Pierre. Keep an eye out for stop signs, there is a weird mixture of stop signs and stop lights. After passing through Ville. St. Pierre the road turns towards the left and up over some rail lines (the road is the same one, but the name becomes Avon). Continue over the overpass, and up a slight hill until you come to an intersection that looks like a sick octopus. The MW Town Hall is on your left. Turn left onto Westminster (which begins here). Continue on Westminster through lovely downtown Montreal West until you find Nelson (sign indicating Recreation and Arena). If you find yourself driving over a big hump, you have gone too far. Turn left onto Nelson and go to the end. Turn right onto Bedbrook and you will see the arena at the edge of the field. There is lots of parking by the field or at the side of arena.
