They were a lot less specific about what they wanted changing for the
paper -- just complained about 'wrong font and size'.

As for what you could try -- one of the 'space saving tips' on their
website is to have the references typeset in fontsize 8, I'm not sure if
this only pertains to papers. See

That may help squeeze the references together..
